Why Does Fox News Bother? September 29, 2008

Sunday morning I was sitting in the “breakfast” area of a Fairfield Inn, located in the Virginia mountains, watching Fox News.  This was the second morning that my brother, sister-in-law, and I had been subjected to the hotel’s choice in morning entertainment.  Joining us this morning was my mother, and if you’ve read my previous blog, you know how she’s voting…..but I digress.  This morning, Fox was discussing what Biden and Palin have to overcome before their VP debate.  While the statements on Biden didn’t surprise me, there was one for Palin that caught my eye.  “Overcome the sexism on SNL”  What???   ……. what?!?!?!   I found it funny when McCain’s camp said the SNL skits were sexist, but to have a news organization spouting off this rhetoric is just pathetic.  Websters defines sexism as “prejudice or discrimination based on sex, especially discrimination against women.”  So to refer to SNL’s skits and Tina Fey’s portrayals as sexist would mean that SNL is lampooning her because she’s a woman?   Really, since when has SNL cared if someone is male or female?  All they care about is if they can get a good laugh off something stupid that person has done or said.  And frankly, Palin has given them quite a bit of material.  McCain’s camp feels that these portrayals are sexist and  “very dismissive of the substance of Palin,” and that SNL defined Hilary Clinton as very substantive.  How is that sexist?  If anything, that’s biased.  But since they lampooned Hilary all last season, I fail to see how they’ve created any imbalance.   Note to the McCain camp…..want to know why SNL portrays Palin as someone with no substance???  Because you’ve sheltered her so much that she hasn’t given us anything of substance.  (ponder that for a moment while I go on)  While all this indignant posturing is expected from the camps of the candidates, shouldn’t a group calling themselves a news organization take an unbiased approach to its reporting?  I know I can be overly optimisic at times, but is it too much to ask that they foster some credibility?  Why bother calling yourself a news organization??  SNL isn’t being sexist.  They’ve been lampooning presidential and vice-presidential candidates for over 30 years.  They even took swipes at the first female vice presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferraro (yes folks, there was one before Palin……24 years ago and guess what, she’s a Fox News analyst!)  For SNL, this is business as usual.

What does Palin need to do before the debate?  STUDY!  Learn something woman!  Educate yourself!  Then, when you are on that stage, you can……wait for it……..wait for it……DEBATE an issue!

It’s sad and funny. The best may be yet to come when Palin debates Biden in 2 days. It may mean I’ll have to start watching SNL live for the 1st time in YEARS!! %^]
