New Moon Embraces the Irony…. April 12, 2009

A bright spot on my rather crappy work day.  Yes…I said work day.  Having to work on a Saturday sucks the big one, but a bright spot appeared when the Daily Mail announced that Michael Sheen would be in the next installment of the Twilight Saga.  Sheen will be portraying Aro in New Moon.  For those of you who don’t know who Michael Sheen is, that could be attributed to one of two reasons.  One, you’re an idiot.  Or two, which I hope is the more popular, you don’t immediately recognize his name because he becomes his characters so well.  For those into the vampire lore like myself, Sheen is best known for portraying Lucian, leader of the Lycans in the three Underworld movies.  For others, he’s well known for his turn as Tony Blair in The Queen and as David Frost in Frost/Nixon, both Oscar nominated films.

What does this mean for New Moon?  Sheen is a great actor who can get lost in his characters.  A talent that is needed for the character of Aro.  For those who don’t know the  Twilight series  (yes, I know some who don’t…..Leah!), Aro is one of the leaders of the Volturi vampires of Italy.  The Volturi are the police, judge, and jury of the vampire world.  Aro is charming, polite, manipulative, conniving, and murderous, with long black hair, onion thin skin, the ability to read your mind with the slightest touch of your skin, oh and a gigantic green streak of envy.  It should be a subtle and nuanced performance, and requires someone with chops.  Director Chris Weitz states he “aggressively” pursued Sheen for this part, and that impresses me.  Gives me some comfort that New Moon will have more depth.

So, where’s the irony you ask?  As Lucian, he was the leader of the Lycans, otherwise known as werewolves., engaged in a centuries long battle with their enemies the Death Dealers, or vampires.  The novel, New Moon, focuses on Bella’s growing friendship with Jacob Black, who is a werewolf and natural enemy to the vampires.  We’re introduced to the growing werewolf  pack and their lore.  And who is Michael Sheen portraying in this film, the leader of the vampires.  Ironic no?

Holla! Non-Twilighters represent! Seriously, I had no idea who that actor was until you said he was Tony Blair in “The Queen.” He looks nothing like that in the picture, which is a good sign that he can easily slip into a different character. I’m also impressed that you wrote an entry entitled “New Moon” without a single DD reference! : )

HA!! Actually my first Twilight post ever (Lions and Werewolves and Vampires…Oh My!!) had a DD reference. I decided not to repeat it so my DD insanity remained hidden. LOL!!!
