This Is The End Poster“Hermione just stole all of our shit.”  That was the line that sold me on the movie This Is The End.  It’s the latest comedic outing from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the guys who brought you Pineapple Express and Superbad.  It comes out on June 14th, but I caught a sneak peek of it last Thursday.  It was hysterical!  The cast is comprised of Jay Baruchel, Seth Rogen, his usual crew of stoners, a slew of comedic talent from TV sitcoms and movies, a Hogwarts witch, and uh…Rihanna.

Based upon a short film by Jason Stone titled Jay And Seth Versus The Apocalypse, This Is The End is just as you see in the trailer; a raucous, vulgar, sometimes gross, stoner apocalypse movie.  Jay Baruchel lands in LA to hang out with Seth Rogen for the weekend.  Yep, they all play themselves.  Or at least, they portray the public perception of themselves.  Except Michael Cera, whom I hope is going completely against type.  Seriously.  Jay and Seth head over to James Franco’s new, post modern home for a housewarming party, although Jay doesn’t really want to go since he’s not a fan of Seth’s LA friends.  The party is pretty entertaining on its own, but soon everything falls apart….literally.  The earth opens up, and many funny people die leaving Seth and Jay stuck in Franco’s home with Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride. What remains is a hilarious look at how six Hollywood actors try to survive with little food, a couple of broken friendships, a few party crashers, and some strange monster activity.  There were the occasional groan-worthy moments, and yes they involve penises, but I believe that was the intended reaction.  Besides it’s all worth it for the surprise cameo!

Since this screening was almost two months before the movie’s release, it’s possible that there will be a few changes made to the finished film, but I hope not.  What I saw had the entire theatre laughing….even the grandma in the back row!

Careful….this is the Red Band trailer….so it’s NSFW!
